Welcome to the Website of Urras Eaglais na h-Aoidhe - www.eyechurch.org

Welcome to the website of Urras Eaglais na h-Aoidhe, the Eye Church Trust. Our mission is to restore and return to community use, the medieval St Columba's Church and churchyard near the village of Aignish in the Hebridean island of Lewis. The Church of St Columba's (Uidh) is believed to date back to the 14th century and is a burial place of the chiefs of the famous Macleod of Lewis clan. It is situated on a narrow, sandy isthmus linking the district of Point to the main island of Lewis.

Over the years, the Hebridean weather and the never-ending effects of the sea, have left this building under serious threat. Major works are needed to ensure that the church and associated graveyard don't fall into the sea. The trust was established to develop projects that will halt the erosion of coast in the proximity of the church, secure and restore the walls and reroof the church.
