PROTECT
The medieval Uidh Church is in real danger of being lost to the sea. At one time, the cemetery around the Church extended at least 10 metres into the sea, providing an invaluable buffer for storm force wind and waves but, through time, this portion of the Cemetery has been lost to the sea, along with the human remains which it once held. Now, the waves of Broad Bay lap at the very foundations of the roofless Church. The picture on the left shows how close the sea has come to the wall of the church.
Protection of the church site is a high priority and work commenced recently to strengthen the sea defences by placing sheet piles into the coastal bank to reinforce it against the power of the sea. (Seen in picture)
RESTORE
The other major aim of the Trust is to have the church building restored. The major element of this part of the project is to reroof the church and consolidate the walls and archways. This will then be complimented by a sympathetic restoration of the interior of the church. We hope to add more information about the restoration in the near future. |
